How Often Should You Get a Massage

Wondering how often to go for massage? Learn the right cadence for stress, training recovery, desk tension, swelling, and maintenance.

Happy woman receiving a massage

“Wow, that was amazing! My body feels alive! So, how often should I come back?”

This is how our sessions usually end, and I always wish there were a simple, single answer. The truth is, everyone moves through life differently. We have different ages, different bodies, and completely different daily demands.

One person sits at an office desk for nine hours staring at three large monitors. Another stands in front of a classroom all day writing on whiteboards. One client hits the gym five times a week, while another is stacking up heavy mileage in preparation for the Nicosia Marathon. Because our physical loads are completely unique, there is no one-size-fits-all formula.

At INTUNE, a massage isn’t just a brief moment of superficial relaxation or a splash of standard pampering. There are plenty of generic spas around for that. Here, we view bodywork as long-term structural maintenance for both your physical body and your mental well-being. It is deeply relaxing, but it is never just relaxation. It is a tool for pain relief, physical recovery, and nervous system recalibration.

Much like going to the gym, you cannot expect permanent physical transformation from a single, isolated visit. The real, compounding benefits of massage happen when it becomes a regular practice.

How Long Should Your First Session Be?

If it has been a long time since your last bodywork session, your tissues are likely tight, restricted, and craving targeted attention. Every muscle group is essentially fighting for relief. That is why we highly recommend a 90-minute initial session. This extended window gives us the necessary time to methodically work through the entire body without rushing. How soon you will need to return depends entirely on your current physical condition, daily stress load, and the specific therapeutic goals we establish.

Designing Your Ideal Frequency Schedule

For Chronic Muscle Tension & Pain: If you are dealing with persistent pain or high structural restriction, we recommend a focused block of 3 to 4 weekly sessions within your first month. Once we break down the primary tissue restrictions, you can transition into a maintenance phase of one or two sessions per month.

For Lymphatic Support & Water Retention: Lymphatic circulation moves slowly. To thoroughly unblock stagnant channels and address lower-body swelling, we recommend a foundational course of 3 specialized sessions spaced closely over 14 to 18 days. After this reset, ongoing maintenance typically falls between every 2 to 4 weeks based on your body’s tendency to hold fluid.

For Stress & Nervous System Regulation: Chronic modern stress keeps the body stuck in a constant flight-or-fight state. While daily outdoor exercise like cycling or running is an amazing tool, busy schedules or physical fatigue often get in the way. A dedicated Relaxing Therapy session every 2 to 4 weeks acts as a hard reset for your nervous system, dropping your heart rate and lowering systemic cortisol.

For Athletic Performance & Recovery: Athletes training for competitive races require a highly strategic recovery window. It is critical to offload deep muscular tension during recovery weeks, right before a race, and immediately post-event. As a general rule, scheduling a session every 2 to 4 weeks (depending on training intensity) ensures your tissues remain compliant, injury-free, and capable of generating maximum force.

Proactive Care: Packages and Memberships

At INTUNE, you can select a curated package of 3 therapeutic or relaxing sessions, or become a monthly member to access consistent care and premium benefits. The ultimate return on this investment is simple: you are proactively protecting your physical resilience, ensuring your body remains capable of doing the things you love for decades to come.

A well-calibrated treatment frequency should leave you feeling more physically organized, not just temporarily relieved. Over time, you should notice easier movement, improved tissue compliance, better breathing mechanics, and a more settled internal state. If your relief completely disappears within 48 hours, it simply means your session interval is too wide, or your current treatment blueprint needs a slight adjustment.

We view therapy frequency the exact same way we view training dosages: enough to trigger positive structural adaptation, without becoming background noise. The right schedule is the one that keeps you moving beautifully—long before your body has to scream for help.
